United States Air Force, Colorado Springs, CO

Architect of Record: AECOM
Historic Preservation Architect: Hartman-Cox Architects

Hartman-Cox Architects is providing historic preservation services for the renovation of the iconic Cadel Capel. In conjunction with AECOM, the restoration of this historic landmark Chapel began in the summer of 2019, reaching a major milestone just recently, transitioning from the asbestos abatement and site preparation to the reconstruction phase. The team is repairing critical pieces to the 60 year-old structure - including the restoration of the two organs, restoration all of the dalles de verre (colored glass panels), and modernization of lighting systems.

Along with fixing the building skin leakage issues, the chapel’s aluminum housing is being replaced, and the 24,000 dalles de verre removed and cleaned. Extensive water testing will be rigorously performed on all waterproofing membranes to establish water tightness prior to reinstallation of all aluminum panels. The interior also received meticulous treatment, including the pipe organ and pew restoration. The Cadet Chapel, completed in 1962 by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago, is a contributing building within the National Historic Landmark of the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Area.
