The architects wanted to create an unsentimental "luminous but placid interior" appropriate to the program, which stipulated its use for both religious and secular purposes. Because the sanctuary was intended for a variety of purposes, its plan was designed to be flexible: chairs and an altar/performance area can be moved as befits the event. Seating for 300 is in three sections around the altar, the wall beyond which is transparent and overlooks the woods and a stream. The project was completed in 1970.
